Why Preserve Cord Blood?

Why do we buy insurance? In order to guard against the consequences of unforeseen events. Preserving your baby's umbilical cord blood is better than an insurance policy, because it is also an investment. Today, cord blood stem cells can effectively treat over 70 different diseases, and could potentially preserve the health of your child or another family member should they be affected by one of them. However, there are promising future applications for treatment of other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and MS. Because cord blood stem cells are especially suited for use in gene therapy, researchers are optimistic about treatments for AIDS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Diabetes. As new treatments with stem cells are proven, the investment you made in preserving your child's cord blood will appreciate.

What are my cord blood options?

  • A parent may choose to save their child's cord blood for use by their child or another family member in the event a life-threatening disease develops. In such a case, the cord blood stem cells are stored and cannot be accessed except by you or your child at the age of consent. This option is available through Cord Partners at any hospital, birthing center, or facility of your choosing within the United States.

  • A parent may choose to donate their child's cord blood to the community, similar in principle to a routine blood donation. Under these circumstances, the cord blood would be released for use by any qualified recipient, or perhaps for scientific research. This option is available through local agencies or the American Red Cross at a limited number of hospitals: call your expected delivery facility to find out if they are able to facilitate a donation.

  • Traditionally, hospitals and birthing centers dispose of the umbilical cord and placenta as medical waste, losing the potential medical benefits it may provide in the future.
